A Bit About Me
Growing up in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Dr. Mónica Rodríguez found her calling in veterinary medicine through a profound experience in her 4th year of college. Shadowing a small animal surgeon during a successful open-chest surgery ignited her passion. Witnessing the heartbeat's steady rhythm and feeling the lungs' vital movement confirmed her dedication to veterinary medicine, particularly in surgery. This pivotal moment set Dr. Rodríguez on a path toward a fulfilling career, deeply rooted in her desire to save lives and solve medical enigmas.
Dr. Rodríguez’s journey to becoming a veterinarian was marked by extensive volunteer work and internships. She served as a veterinary assistant at Hospital Veterinario San Francisco de Asis, Centro de Especialistas Veterinarios de Puerto Rico, and the National Horse Racecourse of Puerto Rico. Her involvement in the "Spayathon for Puerto Rico" events showcased her commitment to animal welfare, as she assisted in spays and neuters for community pets and local strays. Her dedication extended to various externships in small animal surgery both in Puerto Rico and the USA, honing her skills and knowledge.
Currently practicing in South Jersey since 2024, Dr. Rodríguez’s special interests include Surgery (Soft Tissue and Orthopedics), Oncology, Internal Medicine, and General Practice. As a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, she finds immense satisfaction in her role as a healer. Her educational background includes a Summa Cum Laude distinction and being the Class of 2019 Valedictorian from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, where she studied Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Studies. Mónica graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2023 with Summa Cum Laude honors, receiving the Moyer Merit Scholarship and founding the PennVet LVMA chapter. Passionate about her pets—Olena, Carlota, Greta (DSH), and Rex (American Bully)— Dr. Rodríguez enjoys Latin dancing, exercising, painting, fantasy reading, and relaxing at the beach in her free time.
